Effective immediately, public access to SMRH will be limited to the front entrance. The entrance will be staffed by NSHA personnel. Visitors will be asked which patient they are visiting or which health program or service they are looking to access. This information will be verified before the visitor will be allowed to enter the hospital. Visitors will also be asked screening questions.

Access to the Antigonish Health & Wellness Centre is not affected at this time.

Emergency

The emergency department has a separate entrance located by the ambulance bay and can be access through the emergency entrance off of Bay Street. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week*.

If you are arriving after 11 p.m., use the main entrance. The emergency department is located to left of registration. There are signs throughout the hospital indicating direction. 

If you need help immediately, call 911.

To access the mental health mobile crisis team call 902-429-8167 or toll-free at 1-888-429-8167. This is a 24 hour, seven days a week phone service to help you or your loved one cope with mental health and addiction challenges in the moment.

Visiting Hours

Please note: There are currently visitor restrictions in place due to COVID-19. Please visit www.nshealth.ca/temporaryclosures for up-to-date information.

Visitors are welcome from Monday to Friday throughout the day. However, our general visiting hours are from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on week days, and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.
                
Rest Periods include: 
ICU: 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Children and Women's Health Unit: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

*Learn more about NSHA's Family Presence Policy, which welcomes up to two people named by the patient to be their family or primary support person/people.

Parking

A $2 parking fee will be charged when you exit the parking lot. Please make sure you have the correct change before you leave the hospital. Change machines are located in the hospital lobby and the Martha Centre.
 
Weekly and monthly parking passes are available for those patients and families who need them. The fees are:

  • $10 per week 
  • $30 per month 

A deposit of $10 is required for the parking pass. It will be returned when the parking pass is returned.

There are also, parking meters are available at the front of the hospital.

WiFi and Internet Access

Free WiFi is available for patients and their families in all inpatient areas. 

Semi-private and Private Rooms in Nova Scotia Hospitals

  • Private room: Includes one bed and one washroom. You can find current rates here.
  • Semi-private room: Includes two beds separated by curtains and one washroom. You can find current rates here.

Space in our private and semi-private rooms is limited. The sooner we have your insurance information the more likely we are to be able to accommodate your request.

When the booking clerk calls with your hospital admission date, let them know you are interested in a private or semi-private room.

When you are admitted, be sure to have your private insurance card with you and let the admitting clerk know you have requested a private or semi-private room.TV & Phone in your Room

TV and Phone in Your Room

TVs and phones are available for patients in all inpatient rooms.     

TV Service

If a patient upgrades to a private or semi-private room, tv service and newspaper are included in the room price. 

If you have private health insurance and provide the business office with the insurance information, we can bill your insurance provider directly. Any balance that is not covered by your insurance provider will be your responsibility.

If you do not have private health insurance and want to pay out of pocket for the TV services, you can set it up using your bedside phone  to call the Hospitality Network at ext 498 or 1-866-223-3686.The basic television charge is $9.40*/day (*subject to change without notice). This requires a credit card for payment.                 

Phone Service
To set up your bedside phone service, follow the instructions on the card found in your bedside table.

Phone service is billed directly to your home phone account. 

Please note: You need to call to have your phone disconnected at the time of discharge.  

Inpatient Meals

During your stay at the hospital, you will receive breakfast, lunch and supper daily. If you follow a special diet or have food-related allergies or sensitivities, let us know when you arrive.

Meals are served at around 8 to 8:30 a.m., noon, and 5:00 p.m. 

Most patients receive a menu each day with choices for breakfast, dinner and supper.

Patients can order meals through the Dial for Dining program. When using this line the patient will speak directly to a menu centre worker in the food service department and will receive their meal 45 minutes after hang-up. If a patient is unable to speak for themselves, a family member or friend can call from outside the hospital to place the food order.

Please note that breakfast is served from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and lunch from 11:30 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.

Access to the dining area and microwaves is available to staff and visitors throughout the day and evening.

Spiritual Spaces and Quiet Rooms

 
Our Spiritual and Religious Care Department offers support 7 days a week 24 hours a day at the St. Martha’s site. If your concern is of an urgent nature  please call the hospital switchboard 902-867-4500, when you reach the switchboard operator ask for The Spiritual and Religious Care person on call.
 
Regular office hours are:  Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00p.m.  Our office is located on the main floor of the hospital (2 J)
We have a family suite that we have available for overnight accommodations for families who have a critically ill person in the hospital.

Quiet Rooms 
There is a chapel, two quiet rooms, a solarium and the Place of Peace Garden available for families and visitors of patients at St. Martha's Regional Hospital. These are available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Chapel
The chapel is located on level three, to the left of the GARU/MEDSURG unit. To contact the chapel, call 902-867-4500 ext. 4290 or 4291

Services:
Inter-faith service Thursdays:  11 a.m.  
Catholic mass Saturdays: 7:15 p.m.

Eucharist is held in the third floor chapel bi-weekly.  Thursday we have an Ecumenical Prayer Service.
In the Patient Care Areas, there are family rooms available.

Solarium
The solarium has a patient/family fridge that can be used when families are anticipating a long-term stay. There is access to a patio garden that is open for families to use when they need to take a quiet break from the hospital environment.

Please check with the ward clerk before using a quiet room of the solarium to make sure it is not in use. 

The solarium can be used for patient-related conference meetings for health care staff and families to discuss patient progress or care options. The rooms can also be reserved for special occasions for families wishing to celebrate birthdays or anniversaries with a patient who is receiving care at St. Martha's. 

Place of Peace Garden
The Place of Peace Garden is located at the front of the hospital. the garden provides a calming environment with a quiet walkway and peaceful spots to sit, eat and enjoy the fresh air.
